In this painting I'm using the poison pen reference as a metaphor as it's so potent a signifier of transgression. To suggest that a women may be prepared to gleefully disturb, confuse, extort is unsettling. I'm interested in this territory because of what it implies in terms of a writer/artist or any person giving themselves licence, the freedom to write what they must. Clearly this women is addressing a whole list of names and in doing so is crossing them off one by one. But what if we see this list not so much in terms of a simple revenge narrative but rather in a creative sense as killing your darlings or the renunciation of your cherished ideas to become the artist you could be.
